Florida Oceans Day Celebration

The Florida Oceans and Coastal Council joined a host of public and private partners on Wednesday, March 25th, to celebrate Florida Oceans Day at the Capitol. The event was sponsored by the Florida Ocean Alliance and the theme was "Florida’s Ocean Assets in a Changing Climate and Economy".

The Oceans Council hosted an exhibit in the Capitol featuring displays from their reports, The Effects of Climate Change on Florida's Ocean and Coastal Resources and Florida's Ocean and Coastal Economies Report, Phase II. The exhibit was accompanied by a roundtable discussion on the management of Florida's Oceans.

Along with eight displays highlighting report findings, a 10 foot check that hung in the middle of the Capitol rotunda. The check was made out to the "Citizens of Florida" from the The Oceans & Coasts of Florida in the amount of $562 billion. One child was overheard exclaiming "562 billion dollars!" (can you see the head jutting out and the eyes popped wide open…) The check reflects the oceans and coastal economic contribution to Florida’s economy in 2006.
